The Science of Nuru Gel: Ingredients, Preparation & Application
Nuru gel is the defining element of nuru glide massage. Understanding its composition and proper use is essential for appreciating the modality.
What Is Nuru Gel Made Of?
Authentic nuru gel is derived from nori seaweed (Porphyra), the same seaweed used in Japanese cuisine. The primary ingredient is a natural polysaccharide that creates an exceptionally slippery, non-sticky texture. It's colorless, odorless, and hypoallergenic.
The Science of Slipperiness
Nuru gel's viscosity is unique in bodywork. It reduces friction to near-zero while maintaining enough surface tension for the practitioner to control pressure and direction. This creates the distinctive gliding sensation.
Proper Preparation
Professional-grade nuru gel requires careful preparation. It's mixed with warm water and heated to body temperature (98–100°F). The ratio and temperature are critical — too thin and it won't provide adequate coverage; too thick and it loses its characteristic glide.
Skin Benefits
Nuru gel delivers minerals directly to the skin during the massage: magnesium for muscle relaxation, potassium for hydration, iodine for skin health, and vitamins A and C for antioxidant protection.
Aftercare for Your Skin
The gel rinses off easily with warm water. Many clients report noticeably softer, more hydrated skin for days after their session.
