Parasympathetic Response
The body's 'rest and digest' mode activated during deep relaxation.
The parasympathetic nervous system is one half of the autonomic nervous system, responsible for calming the body after stress. During effective massage, this system activates, lowering heart rate, reducing blood pressure, slowing breathing, and promoting digestion. This response is the physiological basis for the deep calm experienced during and after quality bodywork sessions.
