Swedish Movement Cure

The historical therapeutic system that founded modern Western massage.

The Swedish Movement Cure, developed by Per Henrik Ling in the early 19th century, is the therapeutic system that formed the foundation of modern Western massage. Ling combined gymnastics, movement therapy, and manual techniques into a systematic approach to physical rehabilitation. His five fundamental strokes — effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, friction, and vibration — remain the core of Swedish massage today.
