Bodywork Aftercare: What to Do After Your Session

A great bodywork session doesn't end when you leave the treatment room. What you do in the hours following your appointment can significantly impact how long the benefits last.

    Hydration: The Most Important Step

Drink at least 16–24 ounces of room-temperature water immediately after your session. Your body releases metabolic waste during bodywork, and adequate water helps flush everything through efficiently. Herbal teas — chamomile, peppermint, or ginger — are excellent alternatives.

    The First Two Hours

Treat the first two hours after your session as a recovery window. Your muscles are in a softened, vulnerable state and your nervous system has shifted into parasympathetic mode. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and high-stress environments.

    Nutrition After Your Session

Opt for lean proteins, leafy greens, and complex carbs. Avoid heavy, greasy foods and excessive sugar which can cause inflammation. A light meal about an hour after your appointment is ideal.

    Warm Bath or Shower

A warm bath 2–3 hours post-session can extend the relaxation. Adding Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) further supports muscle relaxation. Use 1–2 cups in warm (not hot) water and soak for 15–20 minutes.

    Stretching and Gentle Movement

Light stretching the next day helps maintain flexibility gains. Hold each stretch for 20–30 seconds without bouncing. Restorative yoga is an excellent complement to regular bodywork.

    Sleep

Quality sleep is when your body does its deepest repair. After a bodywork session, you may find you sleep more deeply. Capitalize on this by going to bed at a reasonable hour and minimizing screen time beforehand.

When to Schedule Your Next Session

For general wellness, every 2–4 weeks is recommended. For chronic pain, start with weekly sessions then transition to bi-weekly. Listen to your body.
